CIVL Statement on the Resignation of Chicago’s Cultural Affairs Commissioner
The Chicago Independent Venue League (CIVL) would like to address the recent resignation of Clinée Hedspeth as Chicago’s Cultural Affairs Commissioner. This transition comes at a critical time for our arts community, and we extend our compassion to those affected by these changes.
Clinée Hedspeth's tenure was marked by complexities within the city's arts landscape. Moving forward, it is essential that we seek a new commissioner respected and trusted in the performing arts, cultural venues, and arts education sectors. This individual must be committed to fostering unity and healing through the arts during this time of uncertainty.
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events plays an essential role in nurturing Chicago's vibrant cultural landscape, overseeing major events and providing crucial grants to local artists and organizations. We believe that the next commissioner should embody a collaborative spirit and prioritize the needs of our diverse artistic communities.
As we move into this new chapter, CIVL is prepared to work alongside Mayor Brandon Johnson to help shape Chicago’s cultural and artistic future. It is essential that we navigate this path together, and we invite the Mayor to draw upon our expertise as we collaborate to strengthen and elevate the city’s cultural identity.
In light of these developments, we urge all stakeholders to participate in the selection process for the new commissioner. Our collective input is essential in ensuring that the next leader understands the dynamics of our arts landscape and has a genuine commitment to uplifting the voices of artists and cultural organizations across the city.
As we reflect on this moment, let us continue to embrace the arts as a source of healing, resilience, and unity amid the challenges we face. Together, we can ensure that Chicago remains a beacon of cultural vibrancy and creativity.
Thank you.
